Bios FlowLines Makes It Debut
Bios now offers customers and other gas flow professional another opportunity to tap into the company’s gas flow metrology expertise through publication of a new quarterly e-newsletter, called “Bios FlowLines.”
Bios FlowLines offers helpful, practical information on a range of gas-flow subjects, drawn from the more than two decades of experience Bios has accumulated in solving the most complex gas-flow challenges. Technical and detailed articles provide the cornerstone of the newsletter, but other sections deal with tips on dealing with common flow issues, effective use of various flow devices in different applications, newsworthy developments within the gas flow community and information regarding Bios and its range of products and services.
“Bios FlowLines is geared toward helping the flow professional perform at a higher level,” said Scott Calvert, president of Bios. “It focuses on the things we see every day in the gas-flow community that can help our customers do their jobs better – not on useless information.”
Bios FlowLines is offered without charge to anyone who requests it. Subscribers can un-subscribe at any time.

Defender prices steady in 2012
Prices for the Defender series of gas flow calibrators will hold steady for 2012, company officials have decided. “Given the continuing concerns regarding the national and international economic outlook, we’re trying to hold the line wherever possible to give our customers the best possible price,” Bios President Scott Calvert said.
Calvert added that a review of prices for other Bios products is still underway. “I don’t anticipate dramatic changes in price for our Definer or Met Lab series, if there is any change at all,” he said. “But we’re facing changes in component costs, fluctuations in currency valuations, shipping cost increases and a host of other considerations, so we will have to make a final determination based on a balance of our desire to hold firm on prices and our need to cover higher production costs.”
Calvert said the review would continue through the remainder of the year, with any changes coming after January 1, 2012. “I want to emphasize that we will do our best to hold prices at current levels,” he said.
Current information about prices for all Bios products can be found under the Purchasing Our Products tab.
Klane Wins Free Defender 530 At 2011 Industrial Hygiene Expo
Bios President Scott Calvert (left) congratulates Jonathan Klane, founder and owner of Klane's Education Information Training Hub, LLC, on his selection as recipient of a free Bios Defender 530.
Portland, OR - Jonathan Klane of Fairfield, Maine, is the 2011 winner of a Bios Defender 530 flow calibrator.
Bios President Scott Calvert drew Klane's name from among more than 75 entrants in the annual product give-away conducted by Bios each year at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference & Exhibit. This year's AIHce attracted professionals in industrial hygiene and workplace safety from across North America, as well as international visitors and flow professionals from around the world.
Klane, who heads Klane's Education Information Training Hub, LLC in Fairfield, said he was both "surprised and delighted" to receive the Defender. He also indicated the unit will be useful to him in providing training and consulting services to clients in business, industry, government, and higher education.
"The Defender has a reputation for being easy to operate, so it should fit in well with the instructional programs I conduct," he said. "My philosophy is that learning should be fun, and the Defender fits perfectly with that approach."
Bios to give away Defender at AIHCe
Bios once again will award a free Defender 530 to a lucky attendee of the upcoming American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition May 15-19 in Portland, Oregon.
Visitors to the Bios booth (#1745) can meet the Bios team and learn more about the entire range of Bios products, featuring proven DryCal® technology. They also can register to win a Defender 530, with the lucky winner to be chosen in a drawing set for Tuesday at 1:30 pm. Remember, you must be present at the time of the drawing to win!
Demand for 1020s Continue to Grow
Sales of the Bios Definer 1020 have reached their highest levels since this innovative new product was introduced to the market in December 2007, company officials confirmed recently.
The 1020 is the only primary piston prover capable of handling flows of up to 500 standard liters per minute. Based upon proven DryCal® technology, the 90-pound 1020 provides an alternative to the cumbersome old bell prover, with the added benefit of working with Optimizer software for data capture and transmission to computer record keeping.
Recalibrate Your Bios Device
Bios Customer Service Manager Denise McHale-Cintron has some good advice for everyone who uses the Bios Defender, Definer and Met Lab products: Start planning your annual recalibration now.
“Our products should be recalibrated regularly to assure they continue to meet the demanding accuracy and performance standards built into every Bios device,” she said. “By planning ahead, customers can schedule their recalibration in advance to minimize down-time. 20 Years of Flow Leadership
Bios International this month marks 20 years of serving the gas flow community.
What’s so important about the milestone? Bios Founder and CEO Harvey Padden has his own ideas.
“When Scott (Scott Calvert, president of Bios) and I first started Bios back in 1991, we had a simple approach to business,” Padden said. “We had already spent years developing a breakthrough technology with our DryCal™ dry-piston prover, and we wanted to use it to produce calibrators that were more accurate, more reliable and easier to operate than any other product on the market. And that’s just what we did.”
The overall economic outlook suggests we should have some good opportunities this year, Padden said.
“We have been working hard to keep our product portfolio in line with the evolving needs of our customers,” he said. “We are focusing more than ever on working directly with them to extend applications of our DryCal™ technology and deliver not just superior calibration devices but comprehensive solutions to the flow challenges posed by increasingly complex process technology.”
Calvert offered his own outlook for Bios.
“We achieved this success by producing great products backed by real expertise in flow metrology,” he said. “The Defender, Definer and Met Lab product lines are all doing quite well. And increasingly, our customers are turning to us for our engineering and scientific insights that help them solve individual flow problems and improve process efficiency.”

Bios Hosts North American Sales Reps
Members of the Bios sales and distribution network gathered in Butler, N.J., recently for a two-day review of the complete portfolio of Bios DryCalTM products.
Network members from across the continent saw first-hand demonstrations of the Definer and Met Lab series products and toured the accredited Bios laboratory, where products are manufactured, tested and certified. The group also discussed ways to maintain and expand the network’s ability to provide fast, knowledgeable help for present and prospective Bios customers.
“Bios products have a superb reputation,” said Bios President Scott Calvert. “The ability of our network members to help customers understand our products and make the right product choice is an important element of that reputation.”
