Our History

Bios began in 1991 as the personal dream of Harvey Padden. An entrepreneur at heart, Harvey set out to combine his scientific expertise with his knack for creative invention in order to bring innovative gas flow products to market.

Today, the Bios name is so synonymous with primary gas flow measurement that many of our customers don’t realize that in the early days, we manufactured personal sampling pumps and environmental air samplers for industrial hygiene, environmental monitoring and defense applications. And while our durable, flexible AirPro® sampling line remains in use by countless customers around the world, it was our original, field-portable primary gas flow measurement standard that laid the foundation for our future.

The world's first "dry" calibrator - based on our proprietary DryCal® technology - was born in 1991. Introducing our patented technology, our DC-1 and DC-2 models soon became the favorite of industrial hygiene professionals. DryCal® technology remains a liquid-free, entirely portable volumetric piston prover design - which means it doesn't rely on messy liquid soap solutions to create bubbles that measure flow, or the oil seals used by bulky bell provers and hazardous mercury systems, or non-primary thermal flow elements that are more susceptible to errors from drift or environmental conditions.

With its simple push-button operation, liquid-free nature and fast measurements, primary DryCal® technology – which we now refer to as Proven DryCal® Technology – provides the basis for an ever-expanding array of products and solutions, with the flow ranges and accuracies that meet the individual demands of wider market segments. Today’s Bios portfolio includes the Defender™ Series of primary gas flow standards, the Definer™220 primary flow meter, the Met Lab® Series of high-precision primary piston provers and the Integrator™ 110 command, control and readout device – not to mention our Bios Gas Flow Calibration Solution, which gives you everything you need to fully automate your internal calibrations.
